The Bible calls David a 'man after God's own heart' and certainly it seems that he walked more closely with his Creator than just about anyone else has ever done. He also led Judah into a Golden Age of prosperity and power the like of which she has never since enjoyed. Yet there was rot at the core of his own royal household, and his failure to stop its insidious spread brought him into conflict with the son he loved most.

Absalom, just like his father before him, had women falling at his feet wherever he went. But those who had swooned for his father's bravery were seduced by Absalom's beauty; David had countless military victories to boast of, whilst Absalom exulted only in his vanity; David had won fame for felling Goliath with his sling, but Absalom gloried only in his mane of rampant hair.

Dissolute and dangerous, Absalom wound up at the centre of a plot which all but destroyed his father along with his nation.
