Latin Vocabulary Tests

Book 1

Instructions for Use

Use the tests below to prepare for weekly tests, important exams, or just have fun monitoring your progress whenever you like.
Type the English in the textboxes provided. You must type in EXACTLY what it says in the book (including BOTH answers where there are 2), or the program will not recognise your answer as correct. This means that your SPELLING, SPACING etc. must be SPOT ON!! You must also use question marks, exclamation marks etc. where they appear in the book.
When you've tried all the questions, click 'Calculate score so far'. You'll be told your score, which answers are wrong, and what the computer thinks of your performance! (It's NOT a good idea to check your score BEFORE finishing the test, as all the blank squares will be marked wrong!)
The tests get gradually harder as you gain in experience:

  1. Checklists 1 and 2 have all their words in the same order as they appear in the book, whereas later tests mix them up.
  2. There are 2 tests for each checklist from 3 onwards, because there are more words to learn. From checklist 5 onwards, the lists are divided into 2 distinct halves.
  3. From checklist 4 onwards, there are 2 simple tests with 'words only' (no special endings) and then 1 or more 'Grammar Tests' where you can practise endings too.
  4. In the Grammar tests, you must still enter both alternative meanings where relevant. The program will only accept present tenses in this form: 'I call' (not 'I am calling'). For 'you' forms, do not specify 'singular' or 'plural'; for 'he/she/it' just type 'he'. utinam sis felix!

Book 2

The tests get gradually harder as you gain in experience: notably, the grammar tests use more tenses for the verbs as you learn more. For example, tests 13 to 15 use only the present, perfect and imperfect tenses and the infinitive. From test 16 onwards, pluperfects are included.
Note that from test 17 onwards, nouns are listed with their NOMINATIVE and GENITIVE cases. In the grammar tests from this stage onwards, if the form of the noun you are given COULD be genitive, then it WILL be. For example, if you are asked to type in the meaning of 'insulae', the program will only accept 'of the island', NOT 'islands' or 'to or for the island', even though these are theoretically correct answers. List 20 has an extra test (20Num) to test you on the numbers.
The program will only accept present tenses in this form 'I call' (not 'I am calling'). For 'you' forms, do not specify 'singular' or 'plural'; for 'he/she/it' just type 'he'. Now have a go: and utinam sis felix!
